Waiting For God’s Perfect Time

He said to Saul,

“Why do you listen when men say, ‘David is bent on harming you ? This day you have seen it with your own eyes how the Lord delivered you into my hands in the cave. Some urged me to kill you , but I spared you; I said ‘I will not lift my hand against my master, because he is the Lord’s anointed.”

I Samuel 24 : 9 – 10

Saul was the right and legal king of Israel, living in luxury. David had been secretly anointed as his replacement, but he lived in the desert scrabbling to survive. Saul had a professional army but David had only a small band composed of family members and an assortment of outlaws.

Twice Saul accidentally fell into David’s hands, but David refused to kill him. He felt that would violate God’s will. He would not use his sword to become king. He fought not to win but to survive. Throughout his wilderness period, David position was desperate. David had one precious asset only. God had promised he would be king. David believed this promise even when his situation looked very bad. He would wait for God’s timing.

A sense of timing people say is essential to leadership. You must know when to act boldly and when to wait patiently. When to bend and when to stand firm. David had that critical sense of timing because he trusted God’s control of events. David sets an excellent example of letting God carry out His purposes at His own time and patiently waiting till that time comes.

A Christian should learn to wait upon the Lord’s perfect timing for the fulfillment of God’s purposes in his/her life. He/She should never give in to fretting or envying when evil men succeed in their wicked schemes. He/She must entrust everything to God’s sovereignty, entrusting everything to God’s control. He She must completely believe that everything will be beautiful in God’s perfect time.

Let us learn from what Charles Haddon Spurgeon says :

“If the Lord Jehovah makes us wait, let us do so with our whole heart for blessed are they that wait for Him. He is worth waiting for. The waiting itself is beneficial to us for it tries our faith, exercise patience, trains us for submission, endears the blessing when it comes.”

Waiting for God stresses the following :

Confidence in God’s goodness and faithfulness.

Expectation that God would do something for those who seek Him.

Dependence on God for direction, strength and deliverance.

Waiting for God requires strength. Waiting can be more difficult than working. No matter how long we have been waiting for the Lord, it always worth to wait for God acts wonderfully on behalf of those who wait for Him. Let us be constantly reminded of Isaiah 64 :4;

“Since ancient times no one has heard, no ear has perceived, no eye has seen any God besides you , who acts on behalf of those who wait for Him. “
